Support - Speaker Recommendation

Try the stock speaker in your machine first. You might find that it sounds just fine. In some of my machines, I found very little difference between stock and new speakers. If you need a new one, I recommend a "GRS 8FR-8" speaker. It's an 8 ohm, 8-inch, full-range round speaker. This is same as a Pioneer B20FU20-51FW speaker. I have one in my Bally Star Trek and Bally Lost World pinball machines. This speaker can also be used with my replacement Squawk & Talk and my replacement Sounds Plus / Vocalizer boards. You can get it on Amazon

The speaker is much larger than the stock one, but you can still mount it without enlarging anything. Here are some installation instructions for the eariler games like Star Trek. Start by removing the old speaker. Save the screws and use them to secure the stock speaker grille as shown.

Then mount the new speaker so that the mounting holes match up with the corners of the square wooden plate. I used some short wood screws (or machine screws) and washers for this.

Side Note 1: Do not use a 4-ohm speaker with my custom Early Sound board. This speaker draws way too much power from my amplifier which in turn tries to draw too much power from my on-board power supply. The power supply is either 18v or 39v depending on when you purchased my board. The TIP29 transistor (right heatsink) and upper 1 watt surface mount resistors will get really really warm.

Side Note 2: My replacement Squawk & Talk and Sounds Plus/Vocalizer sound boards, on the other hand, WILL work with both 8-ohm and 4-ohm speakers. The power to the amplifier is done differently. The recommended 8-ohm speaker above is a good speaker for these boards as well.

External Amplifier
There is a headphone jack on the little red board attached to my sound boards which can deliver low level stereo output to an external amplifier. All the sound files on my boards are in stereo format, but the same info is on both channels. My mono amplifier will combine the two channels. To disable my mono amplifier, just turn down the volume and disconnect the speaker.

Check a video I created on a how to connect a low cost external amplifier:

You'll need a thin 3.5mm headphone connector. The following items are the ones I used in the video and are available on Amazon for a reasonable cost.

Amp: Kinter MA170+ 2-Channel 18W Mini Amplifier (has base and treble controls)
Cable: UGREEN 3.5mm to 2RCA male cable adapter.
